"A Shropshire Lad" T-Shirt
A. E. Housman's "A Shropshire Lad" is a classic 1896 poetry collection of love, war, football, and the lives of the young men with a somber yet wistful worldview brought on by their increasingly short life-expectancy as they go from boys to soldiers during the Crimean War.
These 63 poems retain their dramatic urgency even 130 years later because of their plainspoken emotion and nostalgia. They became popular as soldiers carried copies into the Boer war and WWl. They were real stand-on-your-desk History Boys moments in the interwar period; George Orwell said of Housman during his Eton college days "These were the poems which I and my contemporaries used to recite to ourselves, over and over, in a kind of ecstasy".
